Discover the remarkable Jewish heritage of Vlorë, a coastal Albanian city with a powerful story of community, courage, and survival. As we explore the city, we’ll trace the history of Jewish life in Vlorë and learn how Albania became a place of refuge for Jews during World War II. We’ll hear stories of local families who risked their lives to protect Jewish neighbors and refugees, guided by Besa, the Albanian tradition of honor, hospitality, and keeping one’s word.

Along the way, we’ll also touch on the story of Dr. Anna Kohen, author of Flower of Vlora: Growing Up Jewish in Communist Albania. Born into a Jewish family in Vlorë, Kohen’s story offers a personal glimpse into Jewish life in Albania after the war and her family’s eventual journey from Albania to a new life abroad. Through stories like hers, historic sites, and the streets of Vlorë today, we’ll uncover a lesser-known chapter of Jewish history and the enduring connections between Albania’s Jewish and Muslim communities. Co-presented with Wowzitude.
