Virtual Walking Tour: Jewish Split

Date

Sunday June 19

Time (Eastern Time)

11:00 AM  –  12:00 PM

Join the Museum and Our Travel Circle for a livestreamed guided walking tour of Split, Croatia and explore the rich Jewish heritage of this beautiful Mediterranean city. The Jewish community of Split is one of the oldest in Europe, having been there since Roman times, growing in depth and breadth as a haven from the Inquisition, and enjoying special status in the city. The city's Jewish community has seen a revival since Croatia gained its independence in the 1990s.

On the tour, our guide Lea will take us to sites that tell of Split's Jewish past, including the historic Jewish cemetery on the Marjan hill; Morpurgo, which was one of the oldest bookstores in Europe and established by a prominent Jewish family; and the streets of the former Jewish ghetto, where one can see a collection of voids in doorways that once held mezuzzot. We will also see popular landmarks such as the Split Synagogue, the world's third oldest Sephardic synagogue still in use.
